Der japanische Kult-Regisseur Hiroyuki Tanaka präsentiert unter seinem Künstlernamen SABU einen unterhaltsamen Mix aus Komödie, Geisterstory und Yakuzaaktion. Zur Story: Der Mitarbeiter der Stadtverwaltung Kenji muss sich mit der sehr undankbaren Aufgabe herumschlagen, den Abriss eines heruntergekommenen Tanzrevue-Theaters zu organisieren. Die Theaterruine steht einem großen Neubauprojekt im Wege. Eigentlich kein Problem, aber es spukt in dem heruntergekommenen Theater. Kenji braucht Unterstützung und bekommt sie von einer jungen Frau, die ihm als Medium Zugang zur Welt der Geister verschafft. Spätestens als sich der örtliche Yakuza-Clan in die Angelegenheit einmischt, wird es richtig sportlich. Noch komplizierter wird es obendrein, als Kenji für seine Geisterjagd nach Taiwan fliegen muss.

Kenji, a city council worker, is tasked with organizing the removal of a run-down show theater to make space for a new building project. This shouldn't be too hard, but the theater is haunted. Kenji gets help from a young woman who acts as a medium, providing him with a link to the hidden world of ghosts. Problems do, however, not stop there. The local Yakuza clan gets in on the action, and in the end, Kenji even has to travel to Taiwan to resolve his ghost issues.

Dancing Mary is a beautifully crafted, constantly surprising and joyous little film that entertains and delights, while also offering something extra to chew on for those who care. If anything, it's just more proof that Tanaka is one of the best Japanese directors of the past few decades.

“Dancing Mary” is an entertaining blend of horror and drama exploring themes like spirituality and determinism. Within SABU’s body of work, this may not be the most unique take on these issues, but it is certainly another piece of evidence of the director’s imaginative ways of telling a story, one which hints at the spiritual emptiness of today’s world.
