1845, kurz bevor die große Hungersnot ganz Irland in Elend und Verzweiflung stürzte, nimmt der Fischer Colmán Sharkey einen Fremden auf. Patsy, ein Kriegsveteran, begleitet Colmán und seinen Bruder Séan, als sie zum englischen Landbesitzer gehen. Ireland, 1845 on the eve of The Great Hunger. Colmán Sharkey, a fisherman, a father, a husband, takes in a stranger at the behest of a local priest. Patsy, a former soldier in the Napoleonic wars arrives just ahead of ‘the blight,’ a disease that eventually wipes out the country’s potato crop, contributing to the death and displacement of millions. As the crops rot in the fields, Colmán, his brother and Patsy travel to the English Landlord’s house to request a stay on rent increases that Colmán predicts will destroy his community. His request falls on deaf ears and that night Patsy goes on a murderous rampage killing five people including the Landlord and Colmán’s brother, Seán. Two years later and millions of Irish have either died or been displaced. Colmán, blamed for the murders and on the run is unable to prevent the death of his loved ones. Isolated on a rocky island he is driven mad with the trauma of his loss and lives a feral existence in a realm between life and death. After a failed suicide attempt, Colmán encounters a young girl, Kitty, abandoned on the mainland. In an attempt to help her he is injured in an attack and they are both stranded on the island. They nurse each other back from the brink and a life saving friendship develops. But Colmán’s respite is short lived when Patsy, now in the employment of an English bounty hunter returns to find him.


Der Film beginnt zwei Jahre vor der Ballade, zu Beginn der großen Hungersnot. Colmán findet seine Kartoffeln auf dem Feld verrotten, von Kartoffelfäule befallen. Gleichzeitig erhöht sein anglo-irischer Vermieter (Michael McElhatton) die Pacht; Colmán beschließt, ihm einen Besuch abzustatten. Regisseur Tomás Ó Súilleabháin spielt diese Szenen brillant aus: Statt den Vermieter zu einem grausamen, leicht zu hassenden Bösewicht zu machen, ist er stattdessen monumental ahnungslos. Colmán warnt ihn, dass im Frühjahr das halbe Dorf im Grab liegen wird. Unsinn, ruft der Grundbesitzer und erklärt in einem Lasst-sie-Kuchenessen-Essen-Moment, dass ein wenig Härte den Menschen gut tut und sie von der Kartoffelernte entwöhnt.

Arracht sits, however, somewhat outside genre. Featuring beautifully balanced compositions by the cinematographer Kate McCullough – putting shape on chaos – the picture ends as a ghastly fable detailing the horrors of survival. Though less immediately accessible than the domestic hit Black 47, it beds deeper in the psyche. The damp discomforts of a life on the edge of destruction feel uncomfortably vivid. The near mythical quality of the closing images emphasise its place in a great tradition.

Where Daly’s approach had epic resonances and ambitions, Tomás Ó Súilleabháin’s Arracht is a much more intimate production, though one that also contains intense moments of violence. Both productions are also not primarily concerned with the famine, but rather use that devastating context to accentuate narratives of personal trauma and revenge. Arracht is an accomplished production, beautifully shot by Kate McCullough and featuring compelling performances from all the cast, in particular Dónall Ó Héalaí as lead protagonist Colmán Sharkey.
